The also call “Cristo Moreno” is a mural painted of Jesus Christ, which embodies the greatest devotion in Lima. In 1975, the Cabildo of Lima adopted him as their guard and custody. From that moment, he became the sworn Patron Saint from Lima. It was painted by a black slave in the 17th century and its name was originated in a massive earthquake in the 17th century, which destroyed most of the city leaving only that mural standing up.

About the Festival

PeruEvery year, in October, hundreds of thousands of faithful from all races and economic backgrounds celebrate the Lord of Miracles in a religious procession through the streets of Lima. The faithful dress in purple tunics, singing hymns and praying as they accompany the image of Jesus, while the boulevards are dressed in purple, as well, to celebrate his annual procession through the streets of Lima. The brotherhood of the Lord of the Miracles, whose first gangs were organized by Viceroy Amat and Juniet, protects the Christ of Pachacamilla during his procession tours. Their members are five thousand among singers, carriers, “sahumadoras”, honorary brothers and retired brothers.

PeruThe litter which bears the painting weighs two tons and is borne on the shoulders of believers who set out on the traditional 24-hour procession from the church of Las Nazarenas, crossing downtown Lima until it reaches the church of La Merced in Barrios Altos. During this procession is common to see vendors of a wide variety of dishes and sweets. A classic sweet prepare during this festivity is the “Turrón de Doña Pepa”, consisting of three or more flour sticks distributed in rows, bathed with “chancaca” or molasses honey and decorated with sweet pills in several shapes and colors. Also, during this time of the year, Lima hosts the well-known bullfight season held at the “Plaza de Acho” (Lima´s bullring). The season features some major bullfighters (toreros) from Spain and Latin America. This traditional festivity is a delight to many people in Lima since Viceroyalty times, and a source of controversy as well.
