About the Festival
This festival is celebrated every year is called by many as the Great Parade of Friendship as most of the festivities happen on August 15th which is the central day. This parade fills the streets of Arequipa with color and enthusiasm. The regional tourist parade goes through the Historical Center including over 1,000 dancers from its eight provinces. Everyone in Arequipa comes out to see the parade, and seats on rented lawn chairs or benches are coveted spots for a front-row view of the dancers, marchers, bands, floats, and stilt-walkers.
The parade starts around 11 am in strong sunlight and lasts until 9 at night, winding its way along several main avenues. This event aims to rescue, revalue and spread the typical dances from the unknown regions of the southern department, even among many local people. Artists will arrive from the provinces of La Union, Condesuyos, Castilla, Caylloma, Caraveli, Islay, Camana and Arequipa. Along to this parade, there are different events held in the city as the sillar-carving contests, which are fashioning statues out of the white volcanic rock used to construct Arequipa’s historic center.
During the nights you can enjoy the beauty contests and outdoor concerts. Just like at every other public gathering in Peru, informal food vendors come out of the woodwork: offering you full plates of food, drinks, ice cream, fried dough goodies just like the carnival at home. There is also the International fair in “Cerro Juli”, the international competition to climb the Misti, bullfighting, enormous serenade with fireworks and the traditional “Tunas festival”.
