“San Juan” Festival, celebrated in Iquitos, the most important town of Peruvian Amazon jungle. This celebration shows the influence of the Spanish culture in Peru since San Juan used to baptize people in the river and Iquitos is located next to the Amazon river, since Spanish times, he was considered the main Saint of this town.

About the Festival

PeruDuring the entire week, the whole town celebrates as many activities happen along the streets. The main date is on June 24 where the San Juan Square turns into a fair with lots of booths of crafts, local meals, bars, games for the kids and live concerts of local artists. This is a great opportunity to share an authentic Peruvian festival with locals. The locals believe that on this day San Juan purifies the water. So everybody takes a purification bath in the Amazon River and then they parade and enjoy public parties. Around this date, the whole town celebrates and is decorated with colorful, traditional ornaments. They also eat a typical meal named “Juane“ which is a delicious and aromatic rice dish made with pepper, “achiote” or annatto seed, cumin, cilantro, oregano, and a bay leaf and stuffed with chicken pieces, egg, and olives. This preparation is wrapped in a large “bijao” or jungle leaf and boiled to achieve the true flavour of our deep Amazon. During your visit to Iquitos you should not miss a visit to the Main Square, where you can spot the “Iron House” built by Gustave Eiffel in late the XIX century. You can also get deeper into the jungle and enjoy a program in one of the lodges inside the reservation. PeruWe also recommend you to try the exotic Amazonian cuisine that includes many fruits such as camu camu, cocona, pitajaya and meats like river fishes. Dishes like “Juane” (mentioned above) or Tacacho (mashed fried bananas mixed with pieces of pork and served with dry meat) are just some few examples of what you can taste.
