Marinera is a coastal dance of Peru, generally called the “National Dance of Peru.” Marinera is a graceful and romantic dance always danced in couples and uses handkerchiefs as props. The dance is an elegant and stylized reenactment of a courtship, and it shows a blend of the different cultures of Peru. The most important Marinera Festival is celebrated every year in Trujillo. If you are looking for a different experience and enjoy dances, we can create a great itinerary including assistance to the festival.

About the Festival

PeruThe dance itself has gained a lot of recognition and is one of the most popular traditional dances of Peru. Ever since the 1960s, during the month of January, in the city of Trujillo a National Contest of Marinera Nortena is held. Previous to this contest the different academies increase their rehearsal schedules and the city begins buzzing with excitement. Prior to the contest, the President of the Club Libertad chooses a queen, which will rain over the festivities. Festival last 5 days:

On January 21st and 22nd: National finals in the pre-infants, infants, junior, masters and senior categories start. The agility, grace and coquet nature of the dancers will be tasted and the attendants will be able to enjoy this beautiful show of the best dancers in all its categories.

Peru

On January 23rd: The Peruvian Paso Horse Marinera Contest is held. In this particular contest the “Marinera” is danced with a “Chalan” riding on a Peruvian Paso Horse (The dancing horse), while the girl dances around it. This is one of the most interesting contests and many of our passengers fing it to be a beautiful display of grace and elegance.

On January 24th: There is a big parade that include the usual displays, horses, dancers and representative groups from different Dance Academies marching and displaying their talent. That same night the National Choreography Competition will be held and the Marinera and Folkloric dances will be performed on the same stage as the Champion Dancers performance.

PeruOn January 25th: There will be a Grand Finale with the winners of all the categories. The Chabuca Granda Champion of will Champions will also be selected on that night. During all of these days, the people visiting the city have the chance to visit the different Peñas opened for the tourists and locals alike. Also, in Huachaco you will be able to enjoy the “Caballito de Totora” competition.
